Keeping Your Espresso Machine Clean

Clean your espresso machine by backflushing with a blind filter after every use and performing a deep chemical clean every two weeks. Regular maintenance prevents the buildup of rancid coffee oils that sour your shots and clog the internal solenoids, ensuring the machine holds pressure correctly.

Consistency is your best maintenance tool.

If you wait until the machine struggles to pull a shot, you are already dealing with internal scale or heavy oil buildup. Build these habits into your daily morning workflow.

  • Blind filter basket
  • Espresso machine detergent powder
  • Group head brush
  • Microfiber cloth
Ingredients

What goes in.

  • 1/2 tspEspresso machine cleaning detergent
The key technique

Forcing water through the valve

Using a blind filter forces water back through the three-way solenoid valve. This clears debris from the group head and the internal plumbing rather than just rinsing the shower screen.

Step by step

The method.

  1. Daily purge and wipe

Immediately after your last shot, run the group head for five seconds to clear grounds. Use a stiff nylon brush to scrub the shower screen while the water runs, then wipe the group gasket with a damp cloth.

  2. Chemical backflush

Insert the blind filter basket into your portafilter and add the detergent. Lock the portafilter into the group head, engage the pump for 5 seconds, then stop. The water will hiss as it exhausts into the drip tray.

  3. Repeat the cycle

Repeat the 5-second on, 5-second off cycle five times. You want the detergent to work through the valve, not just sit on the screen.

  4. Clear the lines

Remove the portafilter, rinse it thoroughly, and replace it. Run 5 more cycles of clean water (no detergent) through the blind filter to ensure no chemical residue remains in the lines.

Tips & troubleshooting

When it doesn't go to plan.

Tip

Always soak your portafilter baskets in a bowl of hot water and detergent while you backflush the group head.

Tip

Wipe your steam wand with a damp cloth immediately after every use, then purge a blast of steam to clear milk from the tip.

Tip

Use filtered water to fill your reservoir to reduce the frequency of professional descaling.

Questions

The ones that keep coming up.

How often should I use detergent?

Use detergent for your backflush every two weeks or every 50-100 shots. Daily backflushing should be done with plain water only.

My machine is making a rattling sound. Is it dirty?

A rattling or sputtering pump often indicates a scale buildup or a failing gasket, rather than just dirty parts. This usually requires a full descaling process using a liquid descaler.
