Keeping Your Coffee Grinder Clean

Clean your grinder by removing stale oil buildup and loose grounds using a stiff-bristled brush, a dry microfiber cloth, and a dedicated grinder cleaning pellet or raw white rice. You do not need soap or water, which can damage the motor and cause rust on the burrs.

Before you start

Avoid moisture at all costs.

Never use water inside the grinding chamber. If your burrs are made of carbon steel, even a damp cloth can cause instant oxidation.

  • Stiff-bristled nylon brush
  • Dry microfiber cloth
  • Handheld vacuum
  • Uncooked white rice or cleaning tablets
Ingredients

What goes in.

  • 1/4 cupUncooked white rice (or specialized cleaning pellets)
The key technique

Disassemble for a deep clean

To truly remove rancid coffee oils, you must pull the top burr carrier. Once removed, use your brush to sweep coffee dust away from the threads of the adjustment collar.

Step by step

The method.

  1. Unplug the grinder

Always disconnect the power before reaching into the burr chamber to prevent accidental engagement.

  2. Clear the hopper

Remove the hopper and wipe it clean with a dry cloth. If it is especially oily, wash the hopper separately with warm water and mild soap, but ensure it is completely bone-dry before reattaching.

  3. Brush the chamber

Open the grinder to expose the burrs. Use the stiff brush to dislodge grounds caught in the teeth. Work in a circular motion, pushing debris toward the exit chute.

  4. Vacuum out debris

Hold a vacuum hose near the burrs to suck up the loosened dust. Do not touch the burrs with the hard plastic vacuum nozzle, as this can dull the edges.

  5. Run the cleaning agent

Reassemble the unit. Pour the rice or pellets into the hopper and run the grinder until empty. The starch absorbs the accumulated oils trapped in the nooks of the burrs.

  6. Purge

Run a small handful of coffee beans through the grinder and discard the result to ensure no residue remains.

Tips & troubleshooting

When it doesn't go to plan.

Tip

Use a dedicated paint brush or a pastry brush for the fine dust that settles in the crevices.

Tip

Wipe the exterior housing with a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with water, but keep the moisture well away from the ventilation slots.

Tip

If your grinder has a dosing chamber, use a dry cloth to wipe the glass windows clear of static-clinging dust.

Questions

The ones that keep coming up.

How often should I do this?

If you grind daily, perform a full deep clean once a month. Use a brush to clear the exit chute weekly.

Can I use rice in every grinder?

Check your manual first. Some high-precision burrs may be damaged by the hardness of raw rice; if you are unsure, stick to manufacturer-approved cleaning pellets.
