Keeping Your Espresso Machine Clean
A clean machine pulls consistent shots and keeps your coffee tasting like the beans, not like yesterday's residue. You are maintaining the internal plumbing as much as you are cleaning the exterior.
Commit to the daily rhythm
Daily maintenance takes two minutes and saves hours of deep-cleaning effort later. Only use cleaners specifically formulated for espresso equipment.
- Blind portafilter basket
- Espresso machine detergent powder
- Group head brush
- Microfiber cloth
- Descaling solution
What goes in.
- 1/2 tspEspresso machine detergent
- As neededFiltered water
- As neededDescaling liquid
Forcing water through the valve
Backflushing forces pressurized water backward through the solenoid valve, clearing out compacted coffee grounds and oils that settle in the dispersion screen.
The method.
Daily backflush
Insert the blind basket into the portafilter and add a half-teaspoon of detergent. Lock it into the group head, run the pump for ten seconds, then stop. Repeat this five times, then run the pump without detergent to rinse the group head thoroughly.
Wipe the wand
Purge the steam wand by turning it on for two seconds after steaming milk. Wipe it down immediately with a damp cloth; do not let milk dry on the metal, as it becomes nearly impossible to remove without scraping.
Scrub the dispersion screen
Use a stiff-bristled group head brush to scrub the underside of the group head. If the screen is clogged with oils, the water flow will be uneven.
Descale
Empty the water reservoir and add your descaling solution mixed with fresh water. Run half the solution through the group head and steam wand, wait twenty minutes for it to break down minerals, then run the remainder through. Finish by running two full tanks of plain water through the machine.
When it doesn't go to plan.
Always use a cloth dedicated only to the steam wand to prevent cross-contamination.
If your water is particularly hard, descale once a month instead of every three.
Soak your portafilter baskets in hot water and detergent overnight if the holes look blocked by oil buildup.
The ones that keep coming up.
Can I use vinegar to descale?
Avoid vinegar. It is difficult to rinse out completely and the residual smell can linger in your espresso for weeks.
How often should I change the group head gasket?
If you notice the portafilter handle sits further to the right than usual, or if water leaks around the seal, it is time to replace it.
