How to Make Affogato
Affogato is vanilla gelato or ice cream drowning in hot espresso. Place a scoop of cold vanilla gelato in a glass or cup, pull a shot of hot espresso, and pour it directly over the gelato. Serve immediately with a spoon.
- Total time: 15 min
- Hands-on: 5 min
- Serves: 1
- Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients
- 1 vanilla gelato
- 1 shot espresso
Step by step
- Chill your serving glass. Put a clear glass or small bowl in the freezer for 10 minutes. The cold glass keeps the gelato from melting too fast.
- Scoop the gelato. Place one generous scoop of vanilla gelato in the chilled glass. Use real gelato if you can find it — the denser texture holds up better to the hot espresso.
- Pull the espresso shot. Make a single shot of hot espresso using your espresso machine or moka pot. The coffee should be strong and freshly brewed.
- Pour and serve. Immediately pour the hot espresso directly over the gelato. Watch it melt into creamy swirls. Serve right away with a small spoon.
Tips & troubleshooting
- Use the hottest espresso possible — it creates the best contrast with the cold gelato
- Vanilla gelato works better than ice cream because it melts more slowly and has a richer flavor
- Serve in clear glass so you can see the beautiful contrast between the white gelato and dark coffee
- Have your spoon ready — affogato waits for no one
Variations
- Affogato al Caffè con Amaretto. Add a splash of amaretto liqueur to the espresso before pouring over the gelato
- Chocolate Affogato. Use chocolate gelato instead of vanilla, or drizzle chocolate syrup over vanilla before adding the espresso
- Affogato Corretto. Add a shot of grappa, brandy, or sambuca to make it a proper after-dinner drink
Questions
- Can I use regular coffee instead of espresso?
- Strong coffee works, but espresso gives you the intensity you want. If using regular coffee, make it very strong and very hot.
- What if I don't have gelato?
- Good vanilla ice cream works fine. Choose a premium brand that's dense and creamy rather than airy.
- Should I let the gelato soften first?
- No, use it straight from the freezer. The temperature contrast is what makes affogato work.
- Can I make this ahead of time?
- Absolutely not. Affogato is about the moment the hot espresso hits the cold gelato. Make it and eat it immediately.
