How to Make a Perfect Cosmopolitan

A cosmopolitan needs four ingredients in precise balance: vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice, and orange liqueur. Shake everything with ice until the shaker frosts over, then strain into a chilled martini glass. The key is using fresh lime juice and not overdoing the cranberry—you want pink, not red.

Ingredients

Step by step

  1. Chill your martini glass. Put the glass in the freezer for 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prep. A warm glass will ruin the drink before you take the first sip.
  2. Add ingredients to cocktail shaker. Pour 2 ounces vodka, 1 ounce cranberry juice, 0.5 ounces fresh lime juice, and 0.5 ounces orange liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec) into the shaker.
  3. Fill shaker with ice. Add enough ice to fill the shaker three-quarters full. The ice should cover the liquid completely.
  4. Shake vigorously. Seal the shaker and shake hard for 15 seconds. You'll know it's ready when the outside of the shaker becomes frosty and too cold to hold comfortably.
  5. Double strain into glass. Empty your chilled glass if you used the ice water method. Strain the cocktail through both the shaker strainer and a fine-mesh strainer to catch any ice chips or pulp.
  6. Garnish and serve. Float a lime wheel on top or express a lime twist over the surface and drop it in. Serve immediately.

Questions

What's the difference between Cointreau and triple sec?
Cointreau is a premium orange liqueur with a cleaner, more refined orange flavor. Triple sec is the generic category and tends to be sweeter and less complex. Cointreau will give you a better cosmo, but good triple sec works fine.
Can I make this without a cocktail shaker?
You can use a large jar with a tight lid, but the results won't be as good. The proper shaking motion and the metal shaker's cooling effect are part of what makes the drink work.
How do I know if I've shaken it enough?
The outside of the shaker should be frosty and almost too cold to hold. This usually takes 15-20 seconds of vigorous shaking. Under-shaken cosmos taste harsh and aren't properly chilled.
Why does my cosmopolitan separate?
This happens when the drink isn't shaken enough or when the ingredients are at very different temperatures. Make sure everything is cold before shaking, and shake vigorously until the shaker frosts over.
